How Much Does It Cost to Import a Car from Japan to Puerto Rico in 2026?

If you've ever looked at a clean Nissan Skyline or a Honda Acty kei truck and thought "I need that in my life," the first question is always the same: how much is this actually going to cost me?

The answer isn't a single number — it's a stack of costs that add up from the moment you bid at auction in Japan to the moment you drive off with Puerto Rico plates. Some importers keep these costs vague on purpose. We don't. Here's the full, transparent breakdown for 2026, based on real transactions we've handled at JDM Direct.

1. Vehicle Purchase Price (¥200,000 – ¥5,000,000+)

This is the price you pay for the car itself, either at a Japanese auction or from a dealer. The range is enormous because the JDM market covers everything from $1,300 kei trucks to $35,000+ sports cars.

**Typical ranges by category:** - **Kei trucks** (Honda Acty, Suzuki Carry, Daihatsu Hijet): $1,300 – $5,000 - **Kei vans/wagons** (Suzuki Every, Honda Vamos): $2,000 – $6,000 - **Sedans** (Toyota Chaser, Nissan Cedric): $3,000 – $12,000 - **SUVs** (Toyota Hilux Surf, Pajero): $4,000 – $15,000 - **Sports cars** (Silvia S15, RX-7, Skyline GT-R): $8,000 – $50,000+

**Auction fees** typically add 5-10% to the hammer price. These cover the auction house commission, transport from the auction to the port, and basic de-registration paperwork in Japan.

At JDM Direct, our purchase price includes the auction fee and Japan-side transport — no hidden line items.

2. Japan Export & Documentation ($200 – $500)

Before a vehicle leaves Japan, several things need to happen:

- **Export certificate** (Export Certificate of Cancellation): Required by Japanese customs - **Radiation inspection**: Mandatory post-Fukushima check - **De-registration** from Japan's vehicle registry - **Port handling** at the export port (usually Yokohama, Nagoya, or Kobe)

These fees are typically bundled together. Expect $200–$500 depending on the port and whether your vehicle needs any pre-export prep (cleaning, minor fixes to pass port inspection).

3. Ocean Shipping ($1,500 – $3,000)

This is the cost to physically move the car across the Pacific. Two methods:

**RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off):** $1,500 – $2,200 - The car is driven onto a specialized ship - Most common and cost-effective method - Transit time: 4-6 weeks to Puerto Rico - Vehicle must be running and drivable

**Container shipping:** $2,200 – $3,000 - Car is loaded into a 20ft or 40ft shipping container - Better protection from salt air and weather - Required for non-running vehicles - Can share container with parts/accessories

At JDM Direct, our flat shipping rate to Puerto Rico is **$2,000**, which covers RoRo shipping and marine insurance. No surprises.

4. Marine Insurance ($150 – $500)

Optional but strongly recommended. Marine cargo insurance typically costs 1.5-2.5% of the vehicle's declared value.

- $5,000 vehicle → ~$100-125 insurance - $15,000 vehicle → ~$250-375 insurance - $30,000 vehicle → ~$500-750 insurance

This covers total loss (ship sinking, fire) and partial damage (dents, scratches from shifting cargo). We include basic marine insurance in our shipping rate, but you can upgrade coverage for high-value vehicles.

5. US Customs Duties & Fees ($400 – $3,000+)

When your vehicle arrives at the US port (for Puerto Rico, typically Jacksonville or directly to San Juan), you'll pay:

**Customs duty: 2.5%** of the declared vehicle value - $5,000 car = $125 duty - $15,000 car = $375 duty - $30,000 car = $750 duty

**Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF):** 0.3464% of value (minimum $31.67, maximum $614.35)

**Harbor Maintenance Fee (HMF):** 0.125% of value

**Customs broker fee:** $150-$350 for a licensed broker to handle the paperwork

**EPA & DOT compliance:** Vehicles over 25 years old are exempt from EPA emissions and DOT safety standards under the 25-year rule, saving you thousands in compliance costs. This is one reason why JDM imports must be at least 25 years old.

**Important:** Puerto Rico is a US territory, so there are no additional import duties beyond federal customs. Your vehicle clears US Customs just like any import to the mainland.

6. Puerto Rico DTOP Registration ($200 – $600)

Once your vehicle clears customs, you need to register it with DTOP (Departamento de Transportación y Obras Públicas):

- **Title transfer / first registration:** $50-$100 - **License plates:** $50-$75 - **Vehicle inspection (ITV):** $25-$50 - **Marbete (annual registration sticker):** $50-$200 (varies by vehicle value) - **Compulsory insurance (ACAA):** $100-$200/year

JDM Direct handles the entire DTOP registration process for you. We know the exact forms, offices, and procedures — so you don't have to spend days at government offices figuring it out.

**Right-hand drive note:** RHD vehicles are legal to register in Puerto Rico. DTOP does not require a conversion to left-hand drive.

Real-World Total Cost Examples

Let's put it all together with three real scenarios:

**Example 1: Honda Acty Kei Truck (1995)** | Cost | Amount | |------|--------| | Purchase (auction + fees) | $2,800 | | Export docs & handling | $300 | | Ocean shipping (RoRo) | $2,000 | | Marine insurance | Included | | US Customs (2.5% + MPF + HMF) | $120 | | Customs broker | $200 | | DTOP registration | $250 | | **Total landed** | **$5,670** |

**Example 2: Toyota Hilux Surf (1997)** | Cost | Amount | |------|--------| | Purchase (auction + fees) | $8,500 | | Export docs & handling | $350 | | Ocean shipping (RoRo) | $2,000 | | Marine insurance | Included | | US Customs (2.5% + MPF + HMF) | $280 | | Customs broker | $250 | | DTOP registration | $350 | | **Total landed** | **$11,730** |

**Example 3: Nissan Silvia S15 (2001)** | Cost | Amount | |------|--------| | Purchase (auction + fees) | $22,000 | | Export docs & handling | $400 | | Ocean shipping (container) | $2,500 | | Marine insurance | $400 | | US Customs (2.5% + MPF + HMF) | $670 | | Customs broker | $300 | | DTOP registration | $450 | | **Total landed** | **$26,720** |

These are realistic 2026 numbers based on vehicles we've actually imported. Your specific costs will vary based on vehicle value, condition, and shipping method.

Hidden Costs to Watch Out For

Some importers advertise low prices then stack on fees later. Here's what to ask about upfront:

**Storage fees:** If your car sits at port in Japan or the US, you may be charged $10-$30/day. At JDM Direct, we coordinate shipments to minimize port time.

**Currency exchange spreads:** The yen-to-dollar rate fluctuates. Some brokers bake in a 3-5% markup on the exchange rate without telling you. We use transparent, real-time exchange rates.

**Repair costs after arrival:** Japanese auction grades are reliable, but a 25+ year old vehicle may need attention. Budget $500-$1,500 for items like new tires, battery, fluids, or minor repairs.

**Shipping delays:** Weather, port congestion, or customs holds can delay delivery. This shouldn't cost you extra money, but it affects your timeline. Typical total process is 6-10 weeks from auction to delivery.

**The bottom line:** For most kei trucks and practical vehicles, expect to spend **$5,000-$8,000 total landed in Puerto Rico.** For sports cars and specialty vehicles, plan on **$12,000-$30,000+** depending on the model and condition.

How JDM Direct Keeps It Simple

We built our pricing model to eliminate the confusion:

**All-inclusive quotes:** We give you one price that covers purchase, export, shipping, insurance, customs clearance, and delivery. The only extras are DTOP registration fees (which go to the government, not us) and any optional repairs you request.

**No deposits on inventory vehicles:** Vehicles in our current inventory are priced all-in. The price on the website is what you pay.

**Transparent custom orders:** For custom sourcing (you tell us what you want, we find it in Japan), we break down every cost before you commit. You see the auction price, our sourcing fee, and all logistics costs separately.

**Financing available:** We partner with Klarna, Affirm, and Afterpay for flexible payment options. Split your purchase into manageable installments.

Importing a car from Japan to Puerto Rico isn't as expensive or complicated as most people think — especially when you work with an importer who's transparent about costs. The 25-year rule eliminates the most expensive compliance hurdles, and Puerto Rico's status as a US territory means no double duties.

Whether you're after a practical kei truck for $5,000 all-in or a dream sports car for $25,000+, the key is knowing your numbers upfront and working with someone who won't surprise you with hidden fees.

At JDM Direct, we've imported hundreds of vehicles to Puerto Rico and we know every step of the process. If you have questions about costs for a specific vehicle, don't hesitate to reach out. We're happy to run the numbers for you — no obligation, no pressure.
